How to Make Natural, Toxin-Free Toothpaste
From a young age, we're taught to use toothpaste.
Every TV commercial makes it crystal clear, every dentist recommends brushing.
And there's no doubt we need to clean our teeth. We feel it ourselves at the end of every day, after a meal, or when we wake up in the morning.
And yet…
We were taught to buy paste, and we have no idea what's in it.
If you look at the ingredient list, you'll quickly discover it's made of synthetic ingredients that are toxic to humans.
It's no accident that the packaging tells you to call poison control if it's swallowed.
But why would you put something in your mouth that's toxic if swallowed? What's the logic?
Beyond that, fluoride has been found in large-scale clinical studies to be directly linked to impaired cognitive development and lower IQ scores in children, like the study published in the prestigious medical journal JAMA Pediatrics.
"But it protects your teeth!"
In a world where most people put processed, toxic foods into their mouths and bodies, it's no wonder teeth rot and people need over-the-counter remedies (which is what conventional toothpaste really represents) to treat the damage superficially…
By contrast, a comprehensive historical study by the dentist Dr. Weston Price (_Nutrition and Physical Degeneration_)
found that native peoples in remote cultures around the world who ate only traditional, natural food had no cavities and no crooked teeth,
even though they'd never seen a modern toothbrush in their lives.
When you look at the full picture, a few things become clear:
1. First of all, our teeth need nourishment, not just cleaning. So toothpaste should be made of nourishing ingredients, exactly like our diet. 2. The cleaning agents can be completely natural. Our mouth isn't dirty, it doesn't need a degreaser to get clean. 3. Humans have used the ingredients I'm about to use in this recipe for cleaning teeth for thousands of years.
The ingredients and what they do:
- Natural clay (white, brown, or green): The base of the paste. Rich in minerals (like calcium and magnesium) that strengthen enamel, it acts like a magnet that absorbs bacteria and toxins, and cleans the tooth mechanically and very gently.
- Raw coconut oil: Contains lauric acid, which kills cavity-causing bacteria and dissolves plaque buildup. It serves as the fatty base of the paste and creates a protective layer over the teeth and gums.
- Baking soda: Instantly neutralizes acidity in the mouth and raises the pH of saliva (bacteria can't thrive in an alkaline environment). It also breaks down the bacterial layer and gently removes stains.
- Atlantic sea salt: Creates an osmotic effect that reduces gum swelling, speeds up wound healing, and stimulates healthy saliva production.
- Pure essential oils: Add freshness and round out the disinfecting action. Peppermint (for fresh breath), tea tree (to disinfect and break down plaque), clove (to prevent pain and protect enamel), and myrrh (to tighten and strengthen the gums).
Homemade toothpaste recipe (for a jar of about 100 ml)
1. Make the base: In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of raw coconut oil (if needed, warm it slightly so it's liquid but not hot) together with 2 tablespoons of clay (white, brown, or green).
Important_:_ Use a wooden, glass, or ceramic spoon and bowl_._ Avoid metal so you don't disturb the clay's electrical charge_._
2. Add the balancers: Add half a teaspoon to one teaspoon of baking soda to the mixture, along with a tiny pinch of Atlantic sea salt (best to grind it into a very fine powder beforehand). Mix well until you get a smooth, paste-like texture.
3. Upgrade with essential oils:
Drip in the pure essential oils: 5 drops of peppermint, 4 drops of tea tree, 3 drops of clove, and 2 drops of myrrh. Mix one last time.
4. Storage and daily use:
Transfer the paste to a small, sealed glass jar. With each brushing, scoop out a small amount using a little wooden spoon or directly with the brush. Brush as usual, and when you're done, spit the leftovers into the trash (not the sink, so the coconut oil doesn't solidify and clog the pipes).
